Guide to Choosing a Nursing Care Facility in Shreveport, LA

Choosing a skilled nursing facility for a loved one is an important and often difficult decision. When a parent or spouse can no longer safely manage daily activities or household tasks, it may be time to explore care options.

At Spring Lake Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation, we support families in Shreveport, LA as they search for a nursing home that meets their loved one’s needs. We encourage you to learn more about what to look for in a skilled nursing facility and to take the time to find the right fit.

A helpful resource is the Nursing Home Compare tool available on Medicare.gov, which allows you to review and compare facilities in your area.

Medicare also offers a checklist of important factors to consider when choosing a facility. You can visit Medicare.gov to view the full list or use the partial guide below as a starting point.

Consider the following when you visit a care facility:

  • Does the skilled nursing facility (SNF) provides the skilled care you need, and is a bed available?
  • Does the SNF have the special services needed in a separate unit (e.g. dementia, ventilator, or rehabilitation), and is a bed available?
  • Is the SNF located close enough for friends and family to visit?

  • Are residents clean, appropriately dressed for the season or time of day, and well groomed?

Living Spaces

  • Is the temperature in the SNF comfortable for residents?

  • Is there a full-time Registered Nurse (RN) in the SNF at all times, other than the Director of Nursing?
Residents’ Rooms

  • Does each resident have personal storage space (closet and drawers) in his or her room?
  • Do residents have access to a personal telephone and television?
  • Do residents have a choice of roommates?

Activities

  • Are residents, including those who are unable to leave their rooms, able to choose to take part in a variety of activities?
